Heavy Equipment Needed to Demolish Collapsed SDN 3 Sembung Gede in Tabanan
Tabanan’s BPBD, assisted by TNI-Polri and the community, is demolishing the building of SDN 3 Sembung Gede in Kerambitan sub-district, which collapsed on Wednesday (6/5/2026). However, the building levelling process is not proceeding optimally as it is still being carried out manually or by human labour. On-site observations show the demolition using large ropes tied to the roof frame, which are then pulled collectively. This process takes considerable time. In about three hours of work from 08:00 WITA to 11:00 WITA, only two buildings were successfully demolished. Meanwhile, the UKS room and one other classroom remain standing. The Head of Elementary Schools Section at the Tabanan District Education Office, I Made Sukanitera, stated when met at the location that the full building demolition cannot be completed in one day. After coordinating with BPBD, it was suggested to use heavy equipment to facilitate the demolition. “The first day of demolition faced obstacles because some buildings still have sturdy structures. So, it is recommended to use heavy equipment,” said Sukanitera. They hope the building levelling process, including the transportation of remaining materials, can be completed soon to avoid endangering students and teachers. Meanwhile, the Principal of SDN 3 Sembung Gede, Pande Komang Juni Arsana, added that for the use of heavy equipment, they are still awaiting instructions from BPBD. Including vehicles for transporting building materials, which have also been discussed. “We plan to demolish part of the school fence to facilitate the entry of heavy equipment. Because access to the schoolyard is not feasible,” he explained. Although the work is in progress, on Wednesday, students in grades IV, V, and VI were not given a holiday. Meanwhile, grades I, II, and III are still learning online. “This morning, students only came in briefly, then we sent them home after receiving the MBG,” he concluded.
