Heatwave Hell Strikes Europe as Spain Records Extreme Temperatures
The national meteorological agency AEMET has warned of extreme heat affecting Spain at the end of spring this year. The conditions are considered unusual, more typical of peak summer months in July and August. According to Reuters on Thursday, 28 May, AEMET spokesperson Ruben del Campo said temperatures in several areas have reached up to 37 degrees Celsius, with nights remaining hot. In central Madrid, tourists are seen seeking shelter under umbrellas, taking cover in building shade, and cooling off near fountains. AEMET stated that the heatwave in Spain is part of a broader pattern of high temperatures across Western European countries, including Portugal, France, and the UK. The agency also forecasts Spain to experience a summer with above-average temperatures this year. It warned that heavy rainfall earlier in the year has led to denser vegetation growth, which could increase wildfire risks as the vegetation dries out due to prolonged heat.
