Healthy Village Programme Serves Residents of 16 Remote Villages in Mimika
The Healthy Village Programme by the Amungme and Kamoro Community Empowerment Foundation (YPMAK) is providing healthcare services to communities in 16 remote villages in Mimika, Central Papua.
YPMAK Health Programme Division Head Hengki Womsiwor, in Timika on Thursday, explained that the 16 villages are scattered across inland coastal and mountainous areas of Mimika.
“Since February, the Healthy Village team has been stationed in the villages, delivering healthcare services. The team we have placed there consists of nurses, midwives, health analysts, and community health workers,” said Hengki.
The villages are very far from Timika town and from healthcare centres. Access to those areas can only be reached by sea transport for coastal regions and by air for mountainous areas.
“Our presence there is also to support the government in healthcare service programmes, so the team always coordinates services with local health posts,” he stated.
The healthcare services provided in this programme include posyandu services, supplementary feeding for toddlers and pregnant women, screenings for communicable and non-communicable diseases, health education, and maintaining environmental cleanliness.
In addition to implementing preventive and promotive approaches, the Healthy Village Programme team also provides curative services in the form of treatment.
He noted that community support and participation in the served villages is very important to ensure optimal healthcare delivery.
“We hope that village funds can also be allocated to support community health programmes in the villages,” he said.
The Healthy Village Programme has been implemented by YPMAK for several years in partnership with five organisations: Siklus Sehat Indonesia Foundation, Care Peduli Foundation, Rumsram Foundation, Papua Ekologi Foundation, and Papua Lestari Foundation.
The Healthy Village Programme covers Mioko Village, Aikawapuka Village in Mimika Tengah District, Kapiraya Village and Wumuka Village in Mimika Barat Tengah District, Umar Village and Aindua Village in Mimika Barat Jauh District.
Further, Ohotya Village in Mimika Timur Jauh District, Wapu Village in Jita District, and several other villages scattered in Agimuga District and Tembagapura District.
