KUALA LUMPUR (DPA): The haze blanketing Malaysia, said to be
caused by forest fires in Indonesia, has worsened to unhealthy
levels, prompting authorities to advise the public to stay
indoors and refrain from outdoor activities like jogging.
Schools throughout the country were advised by the education
ministry yesterday to cease outdoor sports so that students were
not exposed to the haze, which has persisted for almost a week.
The advice to schools follows that given by health authorities
over the weekend to the public to try and stay indoors if
possible, stop exercising in the open, and for those with
respiratory and heart problems to wear surgical masks if they
venture outdoors.
The haze, which is shrouding almost the whole country, has
also disrupted and delayed air traffic, especially for light
aircraft, in some towns as visibility has dropped below the
requisite 10 kilometers.
