Health Protection Increasingly Crucial Amidst Uncertainty

Rising healthcare costs are becoming a serious challenge for many families. In some cases, medical expenses can reach hundreds of millions of rupiah, potentially depleting savings accumulated over years. Joko Mulyono, an office worker, experienced this firsthand when he had to undergo a series of medical procedures totalling more than Rp200 million.

Joko admitted he never imagined facing such high medical bills. A decision he made years earlier to purchase health protection ultimately became his financial lifeline when various health risks emerged. “At the time, I didn’t fully understand the importance of Islamic insurance. I just bought it without much thought, but it ended up changing my life,” Joko said.

His first major health risk appeared when he required surgery and hospitalisation for a back disorder, costing nearly Rp50 million. Some time later, Joko needed a colonoscopy costing around Rp78 million. Four years after that, he underwent an EVLA procedure for a vascular disorder, with costs reaching Rp102 million. “In just a few years, my total medical bills exceeded hundreds of millions. Without preparation, this figure could have wiped out my family’s future savings,” he stated.

According to Joko, the experience reshaped his view on the importance of health protection and family financial planning. He believes that protection provides not only financial benefits but also peace of mind when facing unexpected risks. “I don’t want anyone else to go through the same thing, worrying about costs instead of focusing on recovery. The younger generation cannot just focus on investing and forget to protect themselves,” he stressed.

Vivin Arbianti Gautama, Chief Customer & Marketing Officer of Prudential Syariah, affirmed that such participant experiences continually reinforce the company’s commitment to providing relevant and meaningful sharia-based protection for the community. “Illness can strike at any time, without warning. We want to ensure every Indonesian family has access to the best protection, from health and life to future planning in accordance with sharia principles,” Vivin said.

Since becoming an independent entity in 2022 through to 2025, Prudential Syariah has paid out claims totalling Rp8.5 trillion to more than 325,000 participants.
