Health Ministry Suspends Anaesthesiology Residency Programme at Kandouw Hospital Amid Bullying Allegations

The Ministry of Health has temporarily suspended the Specialist Doctor Education Programme (PPDS) in Anaesthesiology at the Faculty of Medicine, Sam Ratulangi University (Unsrat), held at Prof. Dr. R. D. Kandouw General Hospital in Manado, following allegations of bullying. The decision comes after the death of a resident, Adrian Rantung, which is strongly suspected to have been triggered by severe pressure from bullying during his duties at the hospital. Unsrat’s Head of Public Relations, Max Rembang, confirmed on Tuesday that an investigation is currently underway. “It is currently being investigated,” he stated. He added that the university has not yet received accurate information regarding the chronology or the exact cause of the resident’s death. A meeting between the Rector of Unsrat and the hospital leadership is ongoing to gather complete data. The Ministry of Health officially reinforced the temporary suspension through a Decree issued by the President Director of Prof. Dr. R. D. Kandouw General Hospital. The decree explicitly cites the suspicion of bullying against a PPDS participant as the reason for halting all teaching and learning activities in the Anaesthesiology study programme to allow for a thorough investigation.
