Indonesia’s Ministry of Health says it is ready to open vaccination services for measles or MR (Measles Rubella) at Lebaran 2026 Mudik posts as a preventive measure against potential rises in measles transmission during the holiday season.

Acting Director General of Disease Prevention and Control (Plt Dirjen P2P) of the Ministry, Andi Saguni, emphasised that the government is focused on protecting vulnerable groups, especially children who have not yet completed measles immunisation, amid high levels of mobility.

Andi explained that measles vaccination services will be placed at key transport points with high visitation. ‘We plan to open vaccination services at mudik service posts, particularly targeting ports and airports,’ he said in a virtual press conference on Friday, 6 March 2026.

The Ministry has also instructed Health Quarantine Centres (BKK) in various regions to prepare the on-the-ground implementation. Regarding stock availability, the Ministry confirmed that MR vaccines have been distributed to provincial and district/city levels, so coordination with local health offices is the key to the program’s smooth running.

Based on observations of trends over the past five years, there is a pattern showing a close relationship between spikes in measles cases and celebrations or holidays that trigger mass gatherings.

‘Cases tend to rise at the start of the year, then fall, and rise again around August to November,’ Andi explained. Given Lebaran 2026 involves massive movement, the risk of virus transmission in public spaces is a serious government concern.

The ministry also urged the public to remain vigilant for signs of measles and to follow public health guidance to reduce transmission risk.
