Health Ministry Issues Advisory on Jatiwaringin Landfill Fire
The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) has officially issued a health advisory for communities affected by the fire at the Jatiwaringin Final Processing Site (TPA) in Sepatan District, Tangerang Regency, Banten. The measure aims to minimise the risk of health problems caused by exposure to the widespread smoke from the landfill fire.
Head of the Ministry’s Communication and Public Service Bureau, Aji Muhawarman, advised residents in the vicinity to consistently wear masks when engaging in outdoor activities. This advisory is particularly aimed at vulnerable groups who face higher health risks.
“Especially for vulnerable groups such as children, pregnant women, the elderly, and those suffering from asthma or lung disease,” Aji stated when contacted on Wednesday (8/7).
In addition to mask usage, the Ministry stressed the importance of limiting direct exposure to smoke from the Jatiwaringin landfill fire. The public is urged to reduce non-essential outdoor activities. Should smoke begin to infiltrate residential areas, residents are advised to immediately close doors and windows.
“Drink plenty of water and avoid cigarette smoke to prevent respiratory tract irritation from worsening,” Aji added.
The Ministry also reminded residents to be vigilant for clinical symptoms that may arise, such as coughing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, wheezing, eye irritation, and skin irritation. If these complaints worsen or show no improvement after three days, the public is urged to promptly consult a doctor or visit the nearest healthcare facility for appropriate medical treatment.
Efforts to tackle the Jatiwaringin landfill fire continue to show positive progress. A joint task force comprising local and central government agencies reported that approximately 45 per cent of the 14-hectare fire area has been brought under control. Firefighting operations are being conducted in an integrated manner through cross-ministerial and institutional collaboration. A total of 300 personnel have been deployed to the site to accelerate the containment of hotspots and prevent further spread.
The public is asked to continue monitoring information updates and directives from the local government or field officers regarding air quality conditions and necessary collective actions. The Ministry of Health confirmed it will continue to monitor the health impacts on communities around the Jatiwaringin landfill fire site and coordinate with local health agencies to ensure emergency medical services remain on standby.
