Health Ministry Investigates Alleged Intimidation of Doctor Icha at Leona Hospital, Kefamenanu, NTT

The Ministry of Health has stated its commitment to thoroughly investigate the case of alleged intimidation against Doctor Icha, a medical professional who served at Leona Hospital in Kefamenanu, North Central Timor Regency, East Nusa Tenggara. This step was taken following the tragic news of the doctor’s death, which is suspected to be linked to psychological pressure. Aji Muhawarman, Head of the Ministry’s Communication and Public Information Bureau, confirmed that the Directorate General of Health Human Resources and the Inspectorate General are currently processing the case. A comprehensive investigation will be conducted to examine the alleged intimidation experienced by the deceased by certain individuals. “Every health worker has the right to protection, security, and respect in carrying out their duties to serve the community. There must be no intimidation, pressure, or actions that degrade the dignity of health workers,” Aji stressed in Jakarta on Sunday. The Ministry strongly condemned any form of bullying, intimidation, or abuse of authority within healthcare facilities. According to Aji, such actions not only injure professional dignity but also have a serious impact on the psychological condition of medical personnel and the quality of healthcare services provided to the public. As a concrete measure, the Ministry will pursue cross-sectoral coordination involving the local government, professional medical organisations, law enforcement officials, and the management of Leona Hospital. This collaborative effort aims to ensure strong legal protection and the provision of psychosocial support for health workers in need. Prior to this, media reports indicated that Doctor Icha died by suicide, with initial suspicions pointing to depression following intimidation by several local parliament members. Regarding this, the Ministry has urged all parties to exercise restraint and refrain from spreading unverified information. The public is asked to respect the ongoing investigation process so that the facts can be revealed transparently. “Doctor Icha’s dedication to serving the community will always be an example for the Indonesian health sector,” Aji concluded. Separately, the North Central Timor Police confirmed they will summon three members of the local parliament for clarification regarding the alleged intimidation of the 28-year-old doctor.
