Headscarf saves shot M'sian guard

KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): A quick-thinking Malaysian security guard used her Islamic headscarf to save the life of a colleague who was shot by robbers, according to a report Friday.

Rozita Arifin, 26, used the tudung (headscarf) to staunch the blood flow after Abdul Majid Mohamad Yusof was shot at close range with an M-16 rifle, the Sun newspaper reported.

She and other colleagues went to Majid's aid at the suburban Sunway Pyramid shopping complex on Aug. 16 even though one of the seven jewelry store robbers was pointing the rifle at her.

"I knew from my CPR (cardio-pulmonary respiration) lesson that Majid could have died from excessive loss of blood ... and the only thing that I had to save him at the time was my tudung," Rozita said.

She and Majid received commendation awards from their employer Thursday. Majid, 52, recovered after a seven-hour operation.
