Head of Traffic Police Reveals No Significant Congestion During Long Weekend
The Head of the National Traffic Police (Kakorlantas) assessed that public awareness in adhering to traffic regulations, combined with the humanist presence of Traffic Police personnel through the ‘Polantas Menyapa’ programme, has been a crucial factor in maintaining safe, orderly, and conducive vehicle flows across various regions of Indonesia.
“We are seeing a positive trend in traffic culture, where the public, particularly motorists, are becoming more wise, patient, and aware that road safety is the priority. Consequently, they are following all officer directions, especially during the implementation of traffic engineering such as contraflow and diversions,” stated Inspector General Agus on Sunday (17/5/2026).
He continued that the parameter for this success is simple: the smooth flow of traffic, with no significant congestion observed on national roads, motorways, or access routes to and from ports, airports, and tourist destinations. Furthermore, no significant traffic accidents were recorded.
Based on monitoring at several crucial points, traffic was observed to be smooth and controlled. According to the Inspector General, conditions remained fluid despite a significant increase in vehicle volume during the return flow of the long weekend and the joint leave period for the Ascension of Jesus Christ.
Agus noted that this year’s religious long weekend served not only as an opportunity for the public to holiday and gather with families but also demonstrated a growing collective awareness regarding the importance of road safety.
“The culture of orderly traffic is becoming part of society’s way of life. We have seen firsthand how the public is becoming more disciplined, respectful on the road, and compliant with officer instructions during the long weekend and the 2026 Ascension of Jesus Christ joint leave period,” he emphasised.
Meanwhile, the ‘Polantas Menyapa’ programme, intensified by the National Traffic Police (Korlantas Polri), was deemed successful in creating an emotional connection between officers and the public. Through a persuasive, educational, and humanist approach, Traffic Police personnel acted not merely as law enforcers but as companions to the public on the road.
He stated that Korlantas Polri units across Indonesia were actively managing traffic flow, conducting safety patrols, and providing direct education to road users at tourist sites, places of worship, terminals, ports, public roads, and motorways.
“As a result, traffic conditions during the 2026 Ascension of Jesus Christ holiday were observed to be relatively smooth, and the number of traffic accidents tended to be more controlled compared to previous long holiday periods,” he said.
Agus also emphasised that maintaining traffic security and order is not the sole responsibility of the National Police, but the result of collaboration among all elements of the nation who care about collective safety.
“Road safety is a shared responsibility. When the public possesses a culture of discipline and the authorities serve with heart, a safe and comfortable atmosphere will be created. This spirit of togetherness must be continuously maintained,” he remarked.
He also expressed his gratitude to all Traffic Police personnel across 34 regional police departments (Polda) throughout Indonesia who remained on standby to serve the public during the long holiday, including volunteers, motorway officers, and transport communities who supported the smooth flow of the homecoming and holiday traffic.
