Head of SOE Regulatory Agency: Electrification Project for 3 Railway Lines to Begin on 20 May 2026

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The Head of the State-Owned Enterprises Regulatory Agency (BP BUMN) and Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Danantara Indonesia, Dony Oskaria, has revealed that the electrification project for three railway lines will begin on 20 May 2026. The three railway lines in question are Jakarta-Cikampek, Jakarta-Sukabumi, and Jakarta-Cilegon. “This year, on 20 May, we will hold the groundbreaking for the electrification of Jakarta-Cikampek, Jakarta-Sukabumi, and also Jakarta-Cilegon,” Dony said when met at the Mulia Senayan Hotel in Jakarta on Tuesday (28/4/2026). The electrification project is part of the development of the railway transport sector. “By carrying out this electrification, it will bring new cities to life along (the routes), reduce urbanisation, reduce pollution, and also reduce the inefficiencies occurring in our transport modes,” he stated. According to Dony, President Prabowo Subianto himself has placed special attention on the railway sector. Therefore, the President often summons the President Director of PT KAI (Persero) to the State Palace to discuss the development of mass transportation that is easily accessible to all Indonesian people. “The President loves public rail transport very much, as evidenced by the President Director often being called by the President to discuss how we want to provide good and accessible mass transportation for all Indonesian people,” Dony said. Previously, KAI planned to expand railway line electrification in line with the development of residential areas, industries, economic activities, and population movements from year to year. The expansion will cover the blue line (Cikarang-Kampung Bandan) up to Cikampek, the red line (Jakarta-Bogor) up to Sukabumi, and the green line (Tanah Abang-Rangkasbitung) up to Cilegon/Merak. KAI’s Vice President of Corporate Communication, Anne Purba, stated that expanding the electrification of railway lines provides room for strengthening services. Travel frequency can be increased, transport capacity expanded, and operational patterns made more flexible to meet needs. “With the continuously increasing trend, service development is directed to reach more areas. The Rangkasbitung line has the potential to be extended to Merak, the Bogor line to Sukabumi, and the Cikarang line towards Cikampek,” she said in a written statement, quoted on Thursday (9/4/2026). Based on KAI data, the number of KRL passengers on the Rangkasbitung line continues to rise, from 43.3 million passengers in 2022 to 77.5 million passengers in 2025.
