Head of KPAI and Chair of Fatayat NU Margareth Aliyatul Passes Away
Margareth Aliyatul Maimunah, Chair of the Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI), passed away on Sunday (1 March). The news was announced by KPAI Commissioner and colleague Kawiyan Tjakjan.
“Yes, that’s correct,” Kawiyan said when approached for confirmation.
Kawiyan stated that Margareth passed away at Fatmawati Hospital in South Jakarta following intensive medical care. Her body was then prayed over at the office of Nahdlatul Ulama’s Central Leadership (PBNU), as she simultaneously held the position of Chair of Fatayat NU.
“I will also accompany her and she will be buried in Lumayan by road after this,” he said.
Margareth came from a pesantren family with roots in East Java’s Nahdlatul Ulama tradition, specifically the daughter of KH. Mohammad Faruq and Hj. Lilik Chodijah Aziz Bisri of Denanyar, Jombang.
She became Chair of Fatayat NU for the 2022-2027 period after being elected at the 16th Fatayat NU Congress forum in Palembang, South Sumatra.
Beyond her work in NU, Margareth previously served as KPAI Commissioner for the 2017-2022 period, and subsequently became KPAI Chair for the 2022-2027 period.
“She was very wise and nurturing, with an extraordinary vision for child protection,” Kawiyan said, remembering Margareth’s legacy.
