Head of Bakom: Prabowo and Megawati Share a Long History of Relations

The relationship between President Prabowo and Megawati Sukarnoputri is a manifestation of the theme for the 2026 Pancasila Anniversary: ‘Pancasila as the unifier of the nation and the foundation of world peace.’ Furthermore, President Prabowo and Mrs Megawati share a long history of relations, stated Qodari to journalists on Tuesday (2/6/2026).

According to Qodari, the dynamics of the political relationship between Prabowo and Megawati have shown that differences in choice or competition do not hinder a shared commitment to maintaining national values. “There are times when we are together and times when we compete, yet we remain one in guarding Pancasila and the unity of the nation,” he said.

When asked about any specific agenda behind the closeness of Prabowo and Megawati, Qodari dismissed such notions. He stated that, as of now, each party is performing their roles and responsibilities according to their respective positions. “To my knowledge, there is none. Each is performing their duties and roles,” he added.

Prabowo is currently focused on implementing national development programmes and improving public welfare. Meanwhile, Megawati and the PDI-P party have chosen to remain outside the government to carry out their political functions. “President Prabowo, as the head of government, is focused on executing development programmes and protecting and advancing general welfare,” he said. “Conversely, Mrs Megawati and the PDI-P have chosen to remain outside the government,” he continued.

Prabowo and Megawati attended the Pancasila Day ceremony, where they appeared to be on friendly terms. The ceremony was held at the courtyard of the Pancasila Building, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Central Jakarta, on Monday (1/6/2026). Vice President Gibran Rakabuming was also present at the ceremony.

Following the ceremony, moments of warmth between Prabowo and Megawati were observed. Prabowo was initially seen conversing with the 10th and 12th Vice President Jusuf Kalla (JK) and the 13th Vice President Ma’ruf Amin. Megawati was seen standing behind JK and Ma’ruf Amin. Prabowo then invited Megawati, JK, and Ma’ruf Amin to walk, but Megawati invited Prabowo to walk alongside her. Megawati was seen holding Prabowo’s hand as they walked together. Their rapport was also evident when they approached students attending the ceremony, both of whom engaged with the students during a handshake session.
