Haze hits Pontianak, masks distributed
PONTIANAK, West Kalimantan: Local youths and health officials stood at traffic lights and crossroads in the city of Pontianak on Friday distributing as many as 1,000 masks free of charge to motorists.
The distribution of the masks was in response to the thick layer of smoke blanketing the city, particularly at night. The smoke is believed to be caused by forest fires.
The city is reported to have been blanketed by smoke for nearly two weeks, disrupting the daily activities of residents.
A lack of rain in the area has worsened the situation, resulting in numerous residents complaining of sore eyes and respiratory problems. --Antara
