Palembang, South Sumatra – The Mayor of Palembang, Ratu Dewa, has instructed schools within his jurisdiction to revert to Distance Learning (PJJ) following the thickening haze caused by forest and land fires (karhutla).

Ratu Dewa stated that decisions regarding teaching methods must be adjusted to the current air quality conditions. This measure is being taken to protect students’ health from exposure to the haze.

“Decisions regarding the implementation of learning must consider the current air conditions,” said Ratu Dewa in Palembang on Saturday (3/10/2026).

He explained that several schools had previously implemented online learning. However, as conditions had temporarily improved, a number of schools had returned to face-to-face instruction.

According to Ratu Dewa, air pollution levels must be the primary consideration in determining whether teaching and learning activities should continue in person at school or be shifted back to an online system.

Therefore, he has requested that schools, alongside school committees, re-evaluate the current air pollution situation.

“The results of these discussions will serve as a basis for determining whether face-to-face teaching and learning should continue or be conducted from home again,” he said.

He also urged the residents of Palembang to wear masks when engaging in outdoor activities, particularly if haze levels consistently exceed safety thresholds without fluctuation.

“I urge the public to limit outdoor activities to avoid exposure to the haze. If it is necessary to go outside, it is best to wear a mask,” he added.
