Hatta's 100th year commemoration

JAKARTA: Indonesians have been urged to emulate the moral teachings and nationalism of the late vice president Mohamad Hatta, who during his life sacrificed much to build the nation.

Indonesian Muslim Intellectuals Association (ICMI) chairman Adi Sasonon said emulating all the good characteristics of Hatta, popularly known as Bung Hatta, was important to help inspire the Indonesian people to survive the current multi-dimensional crisis.

"To cope with the recent crisis, all Indonesians should model themselves on Bung Hatta's character so as to promote the nation's dignity," he said.

Hatta, a true hero who fought for Indonesia's independence, was an ideal role model as besides being a nationalist, he was also a politician and academic, Sasono said at the 100th year commemoration of Bung Hatta birthday.

The fact that he was democratic and the least ambitious for power at the time was undeniable, Sasono added.

Hatta's commemoration will be marked with various activities, including a book launching and a seminar. -- JP
