Hatta Rajasa Remembers Alex Noerdin's Contributions to South Sumatra
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Former Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Hatta Rajasa, has fond memories of the leadership of the late former Governor of South Sumatra, Alex Noerdin.
Hatta stated that Alex brought significant progress to the province of South Sumatra, most notably successfully hosting the 2018 Asian Games in the province.
“In my opinion, South Sumatra experienced considerable progress under his leadership, and one major international event, which many people might not have expected to be held in Palembang, was the international event, the Asian Games,” said Hatta after paying his respects at the mourning home of Alex Noerdin on Wednesday (25/2/2026).
Hatta added that much infrastructure in South Sumatra was built during Alex’s tenure as governor.
Hatta also remembered Alex as a caring individual.
He recounted that Alex often visited during times of grief, specifically when his father and mother passed away.
“I still remember when my late mother passed away; I was in Africa at the time. The late Mr. Alex Noerdin came to the mourning home and waited for me until 1 a.m. He was there,” he said.
“As an ordinary human being, of course, there were shortcomings. No one is without fault or error. Therefore, let us forgive his mistakes and pray that the deceased is accepted by God in the best place,” he said.
He also expressed his deepest condolences for the passing of Alex Noerdin.
“I would like to express my deepest condolences to the deceased and his entire family,” said Hatta.
It was reported that Alex Noerdin passed away on Wednesday while undergoing medical treatment at a hospital.
The body of Alex Noerdin is scheduled to be flown to Palembang on Thursday (26/2/2026) morning for burial at the Kebun Bunga Family Cemetery in the afternoon.
