Hasyim given apology deadline

JAKARTA: A senior Nadhlatul Ulama (NU) cleric gave Hasyim Muzadi, the running mate of Megawati Soekarnoputri, seven days to publicly apologize for using images of NU founder Hasyim Asy'ari in his campaign posters.

Yusuf Hasyim, the head of the Tebu Ireng Islamic boarding school in Jombang, East Java, as well as the son of Hasyim Asy'ari, said he would file a lawsuit against Hasyim if he failed to apologize by the deadline.

Images of the NU founder have been used nationwide in posters featuring Hasyim Muzadi and Megawati. However, only Hasyim is being threatened with a lawsuit because Megawati's representatives have already issued an apology for using the images. -- JP
