PDIP Secretary-General Hasto Kristiyanto hopes the meeting between President Prabowo Subianto and former President Megawati Soekarnoputri during the Badan Pembinaan Ideologi Pancasila (BPIP) event will serve as a momentum to discuss various strategic issues concerning the nation’s future direction.

Both Prabowo and Megawati currently serve as chairmen of major political parties in Indonesia—Gerindra and PDIP, respectively.

Hasto stated that the BPIP event marking Pancasila’s Birth Anniversary is a national ceremony bringing together key national figures.

He added that the meeting between Prabowo and Megawati holds significant importance for national life and governance.

“This is a national ceremony conducted by BPIP, so it also presents a good opportunity for national leaders, state leaders, and government leaders to meet,” Hasto said after leading the Pancasila Birth Anniversary ceremony at Masjid At Taufiq in Lenteng Agung, South Jakarta, on Monday (1/6).

Megawati, as the fifth president of Indonesia, has extensive experience in leading the nation. Moreover, the good personal relationship between Megawati and Prabowo is a key asset in building communication on national issues.

Hasto noted both possess the capacity and experience to make significant contributions to Indonesia’s future path.

“Between President Prabowo and Mrs Megawati Sukarnoputri, she is the fifth president with vast experience and a good personal rapport with President Prabowo,” he explained.

Sharp Critique of Indonesia’s Economic and Fiscal Conditions

Hasto also delivered sharp criticism of Indonesia’s worrying economic and fiscal conditions, particularly the rupiah’s weakening and government spending.

“The current account deficit in the first quarter of 2026 and the negative primary balance in our state budget are deeply concerning. Debt is being paid with more debt, digging a hole to fill another. Coupled with the recent rupiah depreciation, this indicates structural issues and a loss of confidence,” Hasto said.

According to Hasto, PDIP’s proposal for fiscal consolidation under the theme ‘Fiscal Resilience’ is still marred by populist spending aimed at electoral gains.

Therefore, he hopes the meeting between the two leaders can be used to exchange views on the various challenges facing Indonesia, including economic, political, and national development issues.

He stressed that communication among national leaders is crucial to maintaining development continuity and strengthening national unity.

“Thus, we hope the meeting will address strategic issues regarding the nation’s future direction,” Hasto said.
