Jakarta — Hashim Djojohadikusumo, Chair of the Housing Task Force and Special Envoy to the President of the Republic of Indonesia, has stated that President Prabowo Subianto is requesting acceleration of the three million housing development programme to meet public housing needs and reduce the national housing backlog.

“The President wants this (three million housing development) to move quickly, very quickly,” said Hashim during the launch of housing development in support of the Three Million Housing Programme on land owned by PT Kereta Api Indonesia near Manggarai Station in Jakarta on Monday.

Hashim revealed that he met with the President several weeks ago to discuss the programme’s progress, including various challenges that remain in implementing housing development in Indonesia.

He stated that during this meeting, the President believed the housing development programme appeared to be progressing slowly and therefore required acceleration so that housing provision targets for the public could be realised promptly.

Hashim explained that one obstacle being faced was the bureaucratic process, given that the ministry handling the housing sector is a new ministry and still requires adjustment in programme implementation.

“I met the President several weeks ago and discussed this programme (three million housing development). The President asked why the housing programme seemed somewhat slow, it seemed slow to the President,” explained Hashim.

“I explained frankly that there are bureaucratic problems. The Ministry of Housing and Settlements is a new ministry, only a year old, and so forth,” added Hashim.

Nevertheless, he expressed optimism that the programme could progress more rapidly with support from various parties, including PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero), which is participating in the development of transit-integrated housing.

“And frankly, I can see and report to the President that with PT Kereta Api Indonesia, and with the participation of the gentlemen and ladies from KAI, the three million housing development will soon be realised,” said Hashim.

PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) is developing 5,484 units of housing integrated with public transport at land assets around Manggarai Station in Jakarta, Kiaracondong Station in Bandung, Semarang Poncol Station, and Surabaya Gubeng Station in support of the government’s three million housing development programme for urban communities.

“PT Kereta Api Indonesia supports the national development programme through utilisation of railway assets to provide housing integrated with public transport,” said PT KAI President Director Bobby Rasyidin.

The development is being carried out in synergy with the Ministry of Housing and Settlements, the Investment Management Agency of Nusantara Sovereign Wealth (BPI Danantara), and other relevant parties with a public transport-based area concept known as Transit Oriented Development (TOD).

The housing to be developed includes 45-type and 52-type units for urban communities. Housing development is set to begin soon, with handover of keys to residents targeted for early 2027.

He further stated that the company also records approximately 320 million square metres of land throughout Indonesia with potential to be developed into Transit Oriented Development areas to expand access to urban housing.
