Hashim assures NZE commitment aligned with economic growth
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Special Envoy of the President of the Republic of Indonesia for Climate and Energy Hashim Djojohadikusumo has assured that Indonesia’s commitment to achieving the net zero emission (NZE) target by 2060 remains aligned with efforts to maintain national economic growth.
Hashim emphasised that Indonesia continues to target high economic growth while maintaining its commitment to energy transition and carbon emission reduction.
“The Indonesian government is committed to net zero by 2060. Mr Prabowo feels we can accelerate it, but Indonesia does not want to commit economic suicide. We want to have growth of at least 8 percent in the next few years,” said Hashim at the International and Indonesia CCS Forum 2026 in Jakarta on Wednesday.
Hashim said one strategy to achieve the target is to utilise all of Indonesia’s energy resources, including fossil energy, while developing carbon capture technologies such as carbon capture and storage (CCS) and carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS).
According to him, the development of these technologies provides optimism that the fossil energy sector can continue to contribute to the national economy without hindering the achievement of the NZE target.
Hashim considers the existence of carbon capture technology to be important for maintaining national energy security. Moreover, Indonesia still has large reserves of fossil energy resources, such as oil, natural gas, and coal.
He cited global geopolitical conditions that demonstrate countries’ vulnerability to energy supply disruptions due to conflicts and obstacles in international trade routes. Therefore, the government continues to strive to maintain national energy security through various technological innovations.
Furthermore, Hashim revealed the development of carbon capture technology carried out through cooperation with Japan at one of the national fertiliser companies, namely PT Petrokimia Gresik.
The technology is said to be capable of reducing carbon emissions by up to 95 percent while producing derivative products in the form of soda ash or baking soda.
According to Hashim, the success of the technology opens up opportunities for wider application, including at coal-fired power plants (PLTU).
In addition, Hashim conveyed new developments in the utilisation of carbon dioxide (CO2) as a raw material source for microalgae production. The technology is considered capable of transforming CO2, which was previously a burden for the oil and gas industry, into an economically valuable asset.
He explained that microalgae can be utilised to produce biofuel, animal feed, and protein sources that support national food needs, which is also expected to support the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) programme.
