Harvested Area Shrinks, BPS Reports Rice Production Plunges to 4.92 Million Tonnes in May 2026

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reported that the realisation of the paddy harvested area in May 2026 was recorded at 0.96 million hectares, a decrease of 2.35 per cent compared to May 2025, which stood at 0.98 million hectares. Deputy for Distribution and Services Statistics Ateng Hartono stated that paddy production consequently fell 3.43 per cent from 5.09 million tonnes of dry unhusked grain (GKG) in May 2025 to 4.92 million tonnes GKG in May 2026. “The recorded rice production amounted to approximately 2.84 million tonnes, or a decline of 3.43 per cent compared to May last year,” Ateng said during a press teleconference on Wednesday, 1 July 2026. BPS also reported that the potential paddy harvested area for the following three months, June to August 2026, is estimated to reach 2.88 million hectares, an increase of 1.38 per cent compared to the same period the previous year. Potential paddy production over the next three months is estimated to reach 14.61 million tonnes GKG, up 1.18 per cent, while rice production is estimated at 8.42 million tonnes, an increase of 1.17 per cent. Ateng also noted that the realised corn harvested area in May 2026 reached 0.21 million hectares, a 22.04 per cent increase compared to May 2025. Production of dry shelled corn with 14 per cent moisture content in May 2026 was recorded at 1.18 million tonnes, up 19.79 per cent year-on-year. “Cumulatively, production of dry shelled corn at 14 per cent moisture content from January to May 2026 was recorded at 7.20 million tonnes, a slight increase of 2.80 per cent compared to the January-May 2025 period,” he said.
