Harassment Allegation at Yogyakarta's Zero Kilometre Point Resolved Amicably After CCTV Review

An allegation of sexual harassment against a female tourist at Yogyakarta’s Zero Kilometre Point went viral on social media. The matter ended amicably after police and the victim reviewed CCTV footage from the scene. The incident was widely shared on social media, claiming a female tourist was a victim of sexual harassment and racism at the Zero Kilometre Point on Saturday night (4/7). The post also mentioned that a middle-aged man had been detained by police officers. Following up on the report, the Yogyakarta City Police conducted an investigation by taking statements from relevant parties and examining CCTV footage at the location. Acting Head of Public Relations for the Yogyakarta City Police, Iptu Dani Hasan, explained that the incident began when a tourist from Jakarta was walking along Jalan Pangurakan from south to north. ‘She passed a man, and the female tourist felt her chest was touched by the man,’ Dani said when contacted on Sunday (5/7/2026). After receiving the report from the victim, officers immediately detained the man suspected of being the perpetrator for questioning. Police also examined the CCTV footage that recorded the event. According to Dani, the victim was then invited to view the CCTV footage together. ‘From the CCTV footage, it was not visible that the man’s hand intentionally touched the woman’s chest,’ Dani said. He explained that the footage showed the man was adjusting his bag when they passed each other. At that moment, the man’s elbow brushed against the complainant’s shoulder. ‘The incident recorded on CCTV shows a man walking from north to south and passing the woman while he was trying to adjust his bag using his left hand, causing his elbow to brush against the woman’s left shoulder,’ he clarified. Based on the results of the CCTV footage examination, both parties agreed to resolve the matter amicably without pursuing legal action. ‘That is correct (resolved amicably). Based on the CCTV footage, the woman did not report the man and continued her sightseeing on Jalan Malioboro,’ Dani concluded.
