The Secretary General of the Hanura Party, Benny Rhamdani, stated that the Gerakan Kedaulatan Suara Rakyat (GKSR) is fighting for a parliamentary threshold of one per cent for the 2029 General Election.

“The core principle is that everyone agrees that within a single election, in upholding the democratic principle of people’s sovereignty, no citizen’s vote should ultimately result in a lack of voice or representation in the DPR,” Benny said in Jakarta on Sunday.

Benny noted that this proposal represents the political stance of the GKSR following a year of discussions with various stakeholders regarding the electoral system.

“Therefore, one per cent will be the GKSR’s struggle, in the hope that it will also be approved by political parties in the DPR to be established as the parliamentary threshold for the 2029 election,” he added.

Benny mentioned that the GKSR is scheduled to meet with the leadership of the DPR and leaders of parliamentary political parties to discuss the proposal on Tuesday (29/9).

He noted that the Deputy Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, has arranged time to receive the leaders of the political parties participating in the GKSR.

Benny expressed high appreciation to Dasco for being open to listening to the aspirations of non-parliamentary parties, describing the move as a statesmanlike gesture worthy of praise.

“We certainly welcome this, and on Tuesday, the 29th, we will make the best use of the opportunity to visit and hold discussions with Mr Dasco, the leadership of the DPR, and the leaders of all political parties and factions within the DPR,” he said.

Benny stated that the academic paper supporting the proposal is approximately 200 pages thick and will be submitted to the leadership of the DPR and parliamentary political parties.

“Thirty electoral issues have been compiled into our single academic paper. It is roughly 200 pages long, which we will present during our meeting with Mr Dasco, the DPR leadership, and parliamentary political party leaders,” he said.

Benny emphasised that the one per cent parliamentary threshold proposal is a priority for the GKSR, as the organisation believes every voter’s voice must have political representation in the DPR.

“The highest priority is certainly that not a single vote from the Indonesian people, under democratic principles, should lack political representation in the DPR. That is the GKSR’s political standing regarding the one per cent parliamentary threshold,” Benny concluded.
