HANOI: British energy giant BP said on Tuesday its Nam Con Son
field, the largest foreign oil and gas project in Vietnam, has
generated one billion cubic metres of gas sales.

The company said it reached the milestone on Sunday, 14 months
after its 399 kilometer pipeline -- the world's longest -- began
transporting gas from the offshore Lan Tay field to the Phu My
power complex.

Phu My is located in the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau,
south of Ho Chi Minh City.

Electricity of Vietnam's Phu My 2.1 power plant with a
capacity of 900 megawatts has been the main customer. Phu My 3,
in which BP is an investor, is expected to run commercially on
the gas this later month.

Three other plants in the complex are expected to follow suit
this year.

"The excellent business and environmental performance we've
achieved so far has shown our credibility and reliability," said
Mary Shafer-Malicki, director general of the group's Vietnam arm,
the BP Exploration and Operating Co. -- AFP
