Hanoi bids to host 2003 SEA Games

HANOI (AP): Vietnam's most powerful political organ has officially endorsed the country's bid to host the Southeast Asian Games in 2003, the Communist Party newspaper Nhan Dan reported Tuesday.

The green light came from the Standing Committee of the Communist Party's Politburo, which runs the day-to-day affairs of the country.

The government in January approved a pre-feasibility study for a 2.3-trillion-dong (US$165 million) sports complex in Hanoi which would include a main stadium, three indoor stadiums, swimming pools, a bicycle racing track and tennis courts.

The Southeast Asian Games are a regional sporting event held in every two years. The 20th SEA Games will be held in Brunei later this year.
