Hang up on the phone tap probe

From Merdeka

The alleged tapping of a telephone conversation between President B.J. Habibie and Attorney General Andi M. Ghalib during the country's protracted crisis has drawn a lot of attention.

The case is deplorable, but it is more saddening if the material of the conversation is true. In fact, there should be no doubt about the veracity of the material. It can be proven by the order from President Habibie to Minister of Defense and Security/Armed Forces Commander Gen. Wiranto to investigate the culprits.

The hope of the Indonesian nation and people to be led by the country's best son is apparently not fulfilled. The tapped conversation shows we are led by a group of people who behave like the mafia. They unrelentingly attack their political enemies and indiscriminately defend their cronies in the New Order. Ironic indeed.

Nevertheless, we must salute Habibie who did not deny the contents of the recording. As the man in power, he has ordered a thorough investigation of the case and punishment for the culprit in accordance with the laws in force, without considering if the conversation is ethical or is emotionally damaging to the nation which relies heavily on him.

The main target is Arifin Panigoro, who dared to help reformist students to oppose Habibie's policies.

We were prepared for Andi M. Ghalib's denial considering his attitude; it was only fitting that students sent him a hen a few months ago.

I suggest Habibie not continue with the investigation of the case. We cannot imagine what will possibly happen if the case drags on. Forgive them, Mr. President, just as the majority of the Indonesian people have forgiven you for betraying the message of the People's Consultative Assembly. Let this incident enrich the historical records of our beloved nation.

In future, the officials in power should not take shelter behind the laws. They should not institutionalize unjust laws. Give precedence to the nation's interests over personal and group interests. May God Almighty always give us his protection and mercy.
