The government has handed over 120 permanent housing units (huntap) in the first phase to communities affected by hydrometeorological disasters in South Tapanuli Regency (Tapsel), North Sumatra (Sumut).

Interior Minister (Mendagri), as Chair of the Task Force (Kasatgas) for Accelerating Rehabilitation and Reconstruction (PRR) Post-Disaster in Sumatra, Muhammad Tito Karnavian stated that the construction of huntap in Tapsel is one of the fastest in disaster handling in Sumatra.

“This is the fastest collaborative effort, the fastest I can say. The quickest,” he remarked in a written statement received by Kompas.com.

Tito made this statement during the Key Handover Event for Phase One of 120 Permanent Housing Units for Disaster-Affected Residents in Tapsel Regency, Sumut, on Friday (27/3/2026).

He explained that the acceleration of huntap construction is determined by three main stages.

The data is then verified in the field by the Central Bureau of Statistics before proceeding to the construction phase involving various parties.

Several involved agencies include the National Disaster Management Agency, the Ministry of Public Works and Housing (PKP), and non-governmental parties such as the Buddha Tzu Chi Foundation.

On that occasion, Tito also appreciated Tapsel Regent Gus Irawan, who was deemed swift in providing complete damage data, from light, moderate, to severe categories.

The speed and completeness of the data also accelerated the disbursement of housing wait fund assistance (DTH) of Rp 1.8 million for three months during the displacement period.

“That was also due to the data from Mr Regent [Tapsel, submitted quickly],” Tito explained.

According to him, the success of handling in Tapsel can serve as an example for other regions.

Tito urged local governments in affected areas to emulate the speed and accuracy of data collection based on names and addresses.

He emphasised that rapid data collection is crucial, given that the disaster impacts 52 regencies/cities in Aceh Province, West Sumatra (Sumbar), and Sumut.

For information, the government provides three schemes for huntap construction according to community conditions, namely in-situ huntap by BNPB, communal huntap by the Ministry of PKP, and independent relocation.
