Handling migrant workers
Handling migrant workers
From Media Indonesia
An expert presidential adviser said that President Megawati
Soekarnoputri handled the problem of Indonesian migrant workers
better than her Philippine counterpart Arroyo. President Megawati
met with Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad whereas
President Arroyo only spoke to him by telephone.
I disagree with the adviser for two reasons. First, President
Arroyo's telephone conversation with the Malaysian premier was
less expensive. Second, President Arroyo's consultation was
fruitful. The Philippines were able to send an inspection team to
observe workers' conditions in Malaysia and was allowed more time
before caning was carried out. The result of President Megawati's
mission was not announced, and only some ministers and advisers
made confusing statements.
To sum up, the Philippine president handled the issue of her
migrant workers in Malaysia more effectively and efficiently.
