JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Member of House of Representatives’ Commission VIII Hidayat Nur Wahid (HNW) has called on the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah to ensure the rights of prospective pilgrims affected by Hanania Travel’s failed umrah operations.

Under Law No. 14 of 2025 on Hajj and Umrah Management, protecting prospective pilgrims is among the government’s responsibilities.

“We deeply regret the recurrence of this tragedy. Under the latest law, the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah is obligated to actively seek solutions, including pushing for compensation or restitution for pilgrims as stipulated in Article 97 of Law No. 14 of 2025. This could involve service replacement or full refunds,” HNW stated in a statement, cited on Monday, 1 June 2026.

Under the Hajj and Umrah Law, Umrah Travel Service Providers (PPIU) are required to protect prospective pilgrims before departure, during their stay in Saudi Arabia, and upon repatriation to Indonesia.

“Those reporting this case should not feel isolated or intimidated. They are exercising rights guaranteed by law, and the state must provide protection,” HNW said.

He explained that the primary aim of the Hajj and Umrah Law is to strengthen pilgrim protections.

“This new law clarifies the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah’s obligations while reinforcing pilgrims’ rights to protection, quality service, and clear complaint mechanisms,” said the Deputy Speaker of the MPR.

It is known that the Jakarta Metropolitan Police have named Ahmad Syah Farhan, CEO of PT Khazanah Tamma Internasional (Hanania Group), as a suspect in a case involving alleged fraud and embezzlement in umrah travel that has harmed hundreds of prospective pilgrims.

The suspect designation followed investigators finding sufficient evidence during the probe.

Farhan has also been detained at the Jakarta Metropolitan Police’s Detention and Evidence Directorate.

As of now, the Jakarta Metropolitan Police have received two police reports regarding alleged umrah travel fraud by Hanania Group.

Victims reportedly paid for umrah packages to Hanania Group but were not dispatched as per the promised schedule.

The Jakarta Metropolitan Police also received another report from an individual identified as NN regarding umrah travel for two people.

In the report, the victim paid approximately Rp 78.8 million for an umrah package but was not sent as scheduled by Hanania Travel.
