JAKARTA - Hundreds of Hanania Travel pilgrims who failed to depart for umrah have formally pursued legal action by reporting the agency’s owner, Farhan, to the Jakarta Metropolitan Police (Polda Metro Jaya) on Thursday (28/5/2026) afternoon.

The report was filed after mediation attempts between the pilgrims and the travel agency at its headquarters in Kota Kasablanka, Kuningan, South Jakarta, and at the Polda Metro Jaya headquarters failed to yield results.

Novi (39), one of the pilgrims unable to depart on 29 March 2026, chose to file a police report independently at the Integrated Police Services Centre (SPKT) of Polda Metro Jaya without proceeding with further mediation.

The police have received the report with case number LP/B/3823N/2026/SPKT/POLDA METRO JAYA dated 28 May 2026 at 5:41 pm WIB.

The report alleges that Hanania Travel committed fraud under Article 492 of Law No. 1 of 2023 on the Criminal Code (KUHP), as well as Articles 486 and 607 of the KUHP.

Novi explained that Hanania Travel initially claimed the unilateral cancellation was due to force majeure caused by numerous transit flights in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, being cancelled due to global geopolitical conditions.

‘In March, they said it was force majeure. But the pilgrims found out that the tickets and hotels had not even been issued. Eventually, they admitted it wasn’t force majeure but a lack of funds,’ Novi said.

Novi added that she initially chose Hanania Travel due to its positive social media presence, convincing endorsements, and seemingly reasonable package prices.

During previous mediation at the Ministry of Hajj, Hanania had promised refunds for the Syawal group in three instalments: 30% in May 2026, 40% in June 2026, and 30% in July 2026.

‘We were mediating with the Ministry of Hajj, so we still had hope, but two days ago they said they couldn’t pay. It’s completely hopeless now, so we’re taking legal action. Their promises have been empty,’ Novi said.

Similar frustrations were expressed by Ayu (44), a pilgrim from Cimahi, West Java.

She travelled to Jakarta upon hearing that the Hanania Travel owner had been taken to Polda Metro Jaya.

She and her parents have suffered losses of nearly Rp100 million for their June 2026 departure.
