Hamzah Batik Malioboro Yogyakarta Hit by Fire

The batik, craft, and souvenir shopping centre, Hamzah Batik, located in the Malioboro area—specifically on Jalan Margo Mulyo, Ngupasan, Gondomanan, Yogyakarta—caught fire in the early hours of Monday (28/9).

Several amateur videos circulated on social media showing the situation as flames raged on the upper floor of the Hamzah Batik building.

Adi Kusuma, a local resident, confirmed the fire incident. “I received news of the fire at 01:30 (WIB),” Adi said when contacted on Monday.

Meanwhile, Sigit Dwi, an officer from Jogomaton, stated that he heard several loud popping sounds and saw thick black smoke billowing before discovering the fire at the Hamzah Batik building. “We immediately contacted the fire department, and they arrived at the scene,” Sigit said.

He added that the fire spread rapidly, covering the area within five to ten minutes, describing the situation as a ‘large red status’.

The Head of the Yogyakarta City Fire Department, Taokhid, has been contacted for further confirmation. As of the time of writing, no response has been received.
