The Hamzah Batik Malioboro shop in Gondomanan, Yogyakarta, has reopened following a fire. However, the third floor of the souvenir store remains closed.

“It reopened as of yesterday, but for now, only the first and second floors are open,” said a security guard at Hamzah Batik Malioboro, who requested anonymity, when met on Tuesday (6/10/2026).

Observations at Hamzah Batik Malioboro around 11:00 WIB showed the courtyard area filled with tourists sitting and carrying shopping bags from the store. Upon entering the first floor, both local and international tourists were seen busy selecting batik fabrics and clothing. On the second floor, which houses accessories and vintage items, several tourists were present, though not as many as on the first floor.

The staircase leading to the third floor appeared to be blocked off with decorations, and there was also a notice stating that the lift is temporarily out of service. Outside the shop, traces of the fire on the third and fourth floors are still visible despite cleaning efforts. Debris from the roof remains visible from the front of the building.

“Yes, I know about the Hamzah Batik fire, but it’s alright, it seems like it happened a while ago,” said Jehan, a tourist from Medan, to detikJogja on Tuesday (6/10/2026). “I am buying souvenirs, like keychains. The prices are standard; I have always come here whenever I visit Jogja,” they added.

Another tourist, Fathul, also admitted to regularly buying souvenirs at Hamzah Batik. “It is a primary destination; it is somewhat difficult to browse in the markets. Here, the selection is more complete. It is like a department store, having all sorts of typical Jogja souvenirs. It is like a supermarket, so it is easy to shop,” he added.

detikJogja attempted to seek confirmation from the management of Hamzah Batik, but the management declined to comment. Efforts were also made to contact the leader of Hamzah Batik, Bagus D Setyawan, via his Instagram account, but as of the time of writing, the son of Hamzah Batik founder, Hamzah Sulaiman, has not responded.

It was previously reported that the Hamzah Batik Malioboro shop caught fire in the early hours of Monday (28/9). The fire is suspected to have originated from a kitchen area on the third floor of the building. Ps Kasi Humas Polresta Jogja, Iptu Dani Hasan, explained that the fire occurred around 1:30 WIB.

“A witness and his friend, who were repairing a bathroom on the third floor, heard the sound of something bursting and burning,” Dani said when contacted on Monday (28/9/2026).

The fire was successfully extinguished just before dawn. Dani stated that the cause of the fire is still under police investigation, but he confirmed there were no casualties. Following the incident, the management of Hamzah Batik Malioboro decided to temporarily suspend store operations.
