The batik, craft, and souvenir shopping centre, Hamzah Batik, located in the Malioblem Malioboro area of Yogyakarta, caught fire in the early hours of Monday (28/09/2026). The flames consumed part of the third floor of the building situated on Jalan Margo Mulyo, Ngupasan, Gondomanan.

Several amateur videos circulating on social media showed flames erupting from the upper section of the Hamzah Batik building. Local residents also confirmed that the fire occurred at approximately 01:30 WIB.

Iptu Dani HS, Head of Public Relations for the Yogyakarta City Police, stated that the fire was first noticed by a witness who was repairing a bathroom on the third floor. The witness heard the sound of objects popping or exploding and subsequently investigated the source of the noise.

“The witness checked and saw flames in the kitchen area on the third floor. The witness then informed the security guard on duty, who attempted to extinguish the fire using a portable fire extinguisher,” Dani confirmed on Monday.

However, the fire continued to grow, prompting the security staff to report the incident to the fire department and the police. Shortly thereafter, personnel from the Yogyakarta City Fire Department, Gondomanan Police, and medical teams from PSC 119 Yogyakarta arrived at the scene to manage the situation.

The firefighting operation involved 12 fire engines, one water cannon unit from the Yogyakarta City Police, and one fire truck from the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI). The fire was finally extinguished at approximately 04:45 WIB, after which officers continued the cooling process at the scene.
