Hamzah Batik Malioboro Announces Temporary Closure Following Fire
Following a fire in the early hours of Monday (28/9), the Hamzah Batik Malioboro store in Gondomanan, Yogyakarta, has decided to temporarily suspend its operations. No specific date has been provided for when the shop will reopen.
“Due to these circumstances, Hamzah Batik Malioboro will temporarily close its store operations for an indefinite period. All activities, including daily and monthly events, performances, and other activities, are suspended until conditions allow us to resume operations,” stated Hamzah Batik via its official Instagram account, @Hamzahbatikofficial.
A similar statement was shared by the leader of Hamzah Batik, Bagus D Setyawan, via his Instagram account. As the son of the late founder Hamzah Sulaiman, he also confirmed the temporary closure.
“For the time being, the operations of Hamzah Batik Malioboro are suspended until the entire inspection and recovery process is complete. Information regarding the resumption of operations will be shared through Hamzah Batik’s official channels,” Bagus wrote in his Instagram post.
Observations at the site revealed police lines cordoning off the entrance to the Hamzah Batik building. Inafis (Forensic Identification) officers were seen entering and exiting the building to inspect the interior conditions.
The shop was also closed with chairs stacked in front of the main entrance. While pedestrians were seen passing by the building, there was no visible operational activity.
The damage from the fire was clearly visible from a distance. The upper facade of the building appeared charred on the left side, and the roof of the building was reduced to its skeletal frame. From the sides, the remains of the fire were visible, having scorched almost the entire roof, with several outdoor air conditioning units also heavily damaged by the flames.
Attempts to interview representatives of the Hamzah Batik management at the scene were met with a refusal to comment.
