Hamas Relinquishes Authority in Gaza, Board of Peace Ready to Follow Up
The Board of Peace (BoP) stated on Monday that it is prepared to follow up on the relinquishment of governmental authority in the Gaza Strip by the Palestinian resistance organisation, Hamas. The Gaza administration under Hamas had previously declared it was releasing its authority over the territory and preparing to hand over power to the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza (NCAG). ‘We have noted the announcement regarding the dissolution of the ’Emergency Committee’ in Gaza today. Ultimately, our assessment will be guided by actions, not promises, in order to meet the primary needs of the people of Gaza,’ the BoP said on social media platform X. ‘Decisions must be made comprehensively regarding the requirements set out in the roadmap to advance governance, security, and transition in Gaza,’ the body stated. The Board of Peace expects that discussions on the roadmap for Gaza, which includes implementation to ensure the NCAG can carry out its governmental functions, will be successful. ‘The core principle remains a single authority, single law, and single weapon,’ the BoP said. ‘This means the consolidation of all weaponry under the control of the NCAG as per the Comprehensive Peace Plan for Gaza and UN Security Council Resolution 2803,’ the body’s statement read. The Board of Peace also stressed the importance of the transfer of power enabling the NCAG to execute its mandate independently, including in terms of administrative and governance decision-making entrusted to it. In November 2025, the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 2803 to implement a peace plan in the Gaza Strip as agreed by Israel and Hamas in October 2025. In early January, Steve Witkoff, special envoy of United States President Donald Trump, announced the implementation of the second phase of the Gaza peace plan. This second phase encompasses the expansion of the withdrawal of Zionist forces from the Gaza Strip, the deployment of the International Stabilisation Force (ISF), and the establishment of a new governance structure in Gaza that includes the Trump-led Board of Peace.
