Hamas discusses transition to second ceasefire phase with mediators
Gaza — Hamas on Saturday (30 May) said it is consulting mediators on proposals to advance to the second phase of the Gaza ceasefire agreement. Hamas spokesperson Hazem Qassem stated the talks focus on reasonable approaches to facilitate the transition, without providing further details. He accused Israel of violating ceasefire terms and urged mediators to take a clear stance and pressure Israel to fulfil its commitments. Qassem also called on the international community, including the UN Security Council, to intervene and support ceasefire implementation, warning that continued escalation could worsen Gaza’s humanitarian and security situation. On Thursday (28 May), Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the military to expand control in Gaza from 60% to 70% of the territory. Israel has intensified airstrikes targeting residential buildings, refugee tents, and other sites, according to Palestinian sources. Gaza health authorities reported 929 Palestinian deaths since the ceasefire began in October 2025, bringing the total fatalities since 7 October 2023 to 72,938.
