Gaza (ANTARA) - Hamas announced on Saturday (6/6) the commencement of a series of meetings in Cairo, Egypt, alongside various Palestinian factions and mediators to discuss the implementation of a ceasefire agreement and the future of the Gaza Strip.

Hamas spokesperson Hazem Qassem told reporters that the meetings aim to finalise various agreements reached during the first phase, including the cessation of Israeli aggression and escalation, killings, the reopening of crossings, and allowing the entry of the National Committee.

According to Qassem, subsequent discussions will focus on finding a rational and acceptable approach for all parties regarding the second phase, whether involving the entry of international forces or a Gaza technocratic committee into the enclave, or addressing the issue of Palestinian weaponry.

He emphasised that Hamas prioritises the interests of the Palestinian people and is striving to “eliminate any pretext for Israel to continue the war in the Gaza Strip.”

A Hamas delegation, led by its leader in Gaza, Khalil al-Hayya, along with representatives from several other Palestinian factions, arrived in Cairo on Friday (5/6) to attend talks scheduled to last several days.

This development occurs amidst the weakening of the fragile ceasefire between Hamas and Israel agreed upon in October 2025, where key provisions, including disarmament and reconstruction, have yet to be implemented.

The first phase of the ceasefire includes the exchange of prisoners and detainees, the entry of humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip, and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from several areas.

The United States announced in mid-January the commencement of the second phase of the ceasefire. This stage includes the full withdrawal of the Israeli military, the disarmament of Hamas, the implementation of reconstruction, and the formation of a transitional government body in the Gaza Strip.
