Hamas Agrees to Full Disarmament Under Trump Plan
The Palestinian resistance group, Hamas, has expressed its agreement to undergo complete disarmament in the Gaza Strip. This monumental step is part of a peace plan initiated by the international body, the Board of Peace.
A senior Hamas official confirmed to the BBC that the group has approved the Board of Peace’s plan to disarm all armed groups in Gaza, adding that an official statement regarding the decision will be released shortly.
News of Hamas’s agreement to the disarmament process was first reported by US President Donald Trump. He announced that the Board of Peace has reached an agreement for the ‘complete disarmament’ of Hamas and other armed groups in the region. Trump views this agreement as a fundamental cornerstone for the future of governance in Palestine, stating, ‘This is a crucial step towards Gaza finally being managed by a new Palestinian government.’
Under the designed mechanism, the disarmament of Hamas serves as a primary condition for the withdrawal of Israeli military forces from the Gaza territory. This process constitutes the second phase of the US-led ceasefire scheme, which also includes an agenda for the comprehensive reconstruction and rebuilding of the Gaza Strip.
In a post on the Truth Social platform, Trump emphasised the importance of this disarmament commitment within his peace plan. ‘This is a major achievement in the implementation of the Trump 20-Point Plan. This agreement will be executed in carefully structured phases,’ Trump wrote.
‘As the disarmament is completed, Israeli forces will be withdrawn, and the International Stabilisation Force will work alongside the new Palestinian police to take responsibility to ensure Gaza is safe for its inhabitants and its neighbours,’ the US President added.
In his announcement, Trump also expressed his appreciation and gratitude to the mediating nations—Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey—which have overseen the negotiations to this stage. Following the agreement, Cairo is scheduled to host a meeting of Gaza mediators to discuss the implementation of the second phase of the ceasefire plan, as reported by Agence France-Presse (AFP) based on statements from Egyptian state media. As of the time of this report, Israeli authorities have not provided an official comment regarding the disarmament agreement.
Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono clarified that TNI soldiers involved in the International Stabilisation Force in Gaza would not be conducting military operations.
However, the majority of Palestinian citizens oppose the disarmament of Hamas, and there remains significant scepticism regarding whether President Donald Trump’s peace plan will effectively end the war. US officials remain optimistic that Israel will adhere to the 20-point plan for withdrawal from Gaza. Hamas has indicated that a National Committee will manage and store the weapons.
