Half of Indonesia's Population Set to Travel Home for Eid, Majority Using Private Vehicles
Jakarta — Transport Minister Dudy Purwagandhi announced that the majority of Indonesia’s population will undertake mudik (homecoming travel) to their hometowns during Eid al-Fitr 1447 Hijri (2026).
According to a Ministry of Transport survey on population movement during Eid 2026, 50.6% of Indonesia’s population, equivalent to approximately 143.91 million people, are expected to undertake mudik travel.
“Based on the survey of population movement during Eid 2026, it is recorded that 50.6% of Indonesia’s population, or approximately 143.91 million people, will undertake mudik travel,” Purwagandhi stated during a full cabinet session on Friday, 13 March 2026.
The projected figures for mudik movement in 2026 show a 1.75% decline compared to the previous year, which reached 146 million travellers. However, Purwagandhi expressed optimism that the number of mudik travellers could exceed the survey estimates, noting that actual figures from the previous year surpassed predictions.
“This figure has indeed declined by 1.75% compared to the 2025 survey of approximately 146 million. However, the actual realisation in 2025 reached 154 million. This means that public mobility during the Eid period itself exceeded the survey figure,” he added.
Purwagandhi detailed that the largest movement originates from West Java, followed by DKI Jakarta and East Java. Regarding destinations, the largest flows are directed towards Central Java, East Java, and West Java.
Regarding modes of transport, Purwagandhi specified that private vehicles remain the primary choice for mudik travellers, with numbers reaching 76.24 million. Following private cars, motorcycles and buses account for 24.08 million and 23.34 million people respectively.
“Nationally, private cars remain the primary means of transport for mudik travellers with 76.24 million people, followed by motorcycles and buses,” Purwagandhi explained.
