At the time the photo was taken, millions of pilgrims from around the world were performing the central pillar of Hajj, the standing at Arafat. From the International Space Station (ISS), the vast expanse of Arafat Plain was visible, teeming with a sea of people clad in identical white garments, standing shoulder to shoulder in solemn silence, seeking Allah’s forgiveness and mercy.
This historic image was captured by Sultan Al Neyadi, a UAE astronaut who was on a long-duration mission in space. For Al Neyadi, the moment was not merely a visual recording but a profound emotional and spiritual experience. Despite being physically floating far above Earth, he felt spiritually present alongside millions of Muslims fulfilling their sacred duty.
In his social media post on X, Al Neyadi shared not only the image but also the profound meaning behind this sacred moment. One particularly striking moment was the Islamic New Year 1445 Hijriah. Historic Mission
Sultan Al Neyadi was part of SpaceX Crew-6, launched into space in February 2023. He made history as the first Arab astronaut to undertake a long-duration mission aboard the International Space Station, staying there for approximately six months.
Notably, while orbiting more than 400 kilometres above Earth, Al Neyadi observed key Islamic events, including the holy month of Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr, and Eid al-Adha. He performed fasting and prayers in microgravity, demonstrating that worship and devotion can be carried out anywhere, at any time, and under any circumstances, as long as the intention and heart remain focused on Allah SWT.
