Hajj Deaths Drop Sharply in 2026 Amid Improved Management

Makkah, KOMPAS.com - Indonesian Deputy Hajj and Umrah Minister Dahnil Anzar Simanjuntak claimed the quality of the 1447 AH/2026 CE Hajj pilgrimage management has improved. This is evidenced by a drastic drop in the death rate of Indonesian pilgrims. Current data shows around 134 fatalities, half of last year’s figure. “By the same date last year, the number of deceased pilgrims had reached 267, whereas this year it is around 130,” Dahnil stated on Saturday (30 May 2026). Particularly in areas directly related to health and movement of pilgrims at critical points such as Arafah, Muzdalifah, and Mina (Armuzna). Dahnil said the mobilisation phase proceeded more smoothly without significant delays, with all pilgrims departing for Arafah on time. The movement to Muzdalifah and Mina also proceeded without issues. Despite the encouraging trend, the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah (Kemenhaj) remains cautious. Physical monitoring and additional protection for elderly and high-risk pilgrims will continue to be prioritised. “We will continue evaluations and improvements, particularly regarding pilgrim health management to further reduce mortality rates in the future,” he said. Classic issues such as pilgrim discipline and tent management at Arafah and Mina persist. For example, irresponsible parties removing tent occupancy lists, causing delays in official clearance processes. Queuing culture when waiting to depart for Mina remains prone to provocation that could spark unrest. “Overall, significant progress has been made this year. However, ongoing issues will be evaluated to ensure future Hajj services are better and safer for pilgrims,” he concluded.
