Hajj Corruption Suspect Asrul Azis Files New Pre-Trial Motion, Protests Search
Asrul Azis Taba, a suspect in the alleged hajj quota corruption case and Chairman of the Association of Hajj and Umrah Travel Organisers of the Republic of Indonesia (Kesthuri), has filed a new pre-trial motion. Asrul is now contesting the legality of a search. “Case classification: the legality of the forced effort to conduct a search,” stated the South Jakarta District Court’s Case Tracking Information System, seen on Saturday (18/7/2026). This pre-trial motion was filed by Asrul on Friday (17/6) with case registration number 121/Pid.Pra/2026/PN JKT.SEL. The first hearing is scheduled for Friday (24/7). “The petition’s request cannot be displayed yet,” wrote the South Jakarta District Court’s SIPP.
Previously, a South Jakarta District Court judge rejected Asrul Azis Taba’s pre-trial motion. The judge ruled that Asrul’s status as a suspect in the hajj quota corruption case was lawful. This ruling was read by single judge I Ketut Darpawan during a pre-trial hearing at the South Jakarta District Court on Monday (6/7). The judge declared the rejection of the applicant’s pre-trial motion. “Ruling, rejects the applicant’s pre-trial motion. Orders the applicant to pay court costs amounting to nil,” said Judge Ketut while reading the verdict. In his considerations, the judge stated that the evidence held by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) met the required standards. Therefore, the judge said, this strengthened the grounds for naming Asrul a suspect. The judge noted that the KPK possessed documentary evidence indicating a criminal act of corruption. Furthermore, the judge added, the KPK had indicative evidence in the form of electronic evidence. The judge also dismissed Asrul’s argument regarding his detention due to his advanced age. As is known, all suspects in the hajj quota corruption case have been detained by the KPK. The details are as follows: 1. Former Minister of Religious Affairs Yaqut Cholil Qoumas (YCQ) 2. Former Special Staff to Yaqut, Ishfah Abidal Azis alias Gus Alex (IAA) 3. Operational Director of PT Makassar Toraja (Maktour) Ismail Adham (ISM) 4. Chairman of Kesthuri Association Asrul Azis Taba (ASR).
