Haedar Nashir: Ryamizard Ryacudu a Guardian of National Unity
Muhammadiyah’s Central Leadership (PP) has expressed condolences over the death of Indonesia’s Defence Minister from 2014 to 2019, Ryamizard Ryacudu. The former Army Chief of Staff passed away on Sunday afternoon, 31 May 2026, at the age of 76 at Gatot Subroto Army Central Hospital in Jakarta. ‘The late Ryamizard Ryacudu demonstrated a strong commitment to national values, unity, and the integrity of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia during his tenure as a state official and retired TNI officer,’ said Haedar Nashir, Muhammadiyah’s General Chairperson, on 31 May 2026. Haedar recalled that the retired TNI general was deeply concerned with societal dynamics during his lifetime. Ryamizard was also noted for actively engaging with all sectors of society. ‘In several instances, he visited Muhammadiyah to discuss national issues aimed at strengthening national unity,’ Haedar added. Throughout his life and career, Ryamizard was consistently regarded as a state official and retired officer who upheld commitments to national values, preserving unity, and safeguarding the integrity of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia. From his active involvement, Haedar continued, Ryamizard demonstrated significant roles in maintaining the nation’s unity. ‘His integrity and dedication in carrying out his duties were integral parts of his service journey,’ Haedar said. Haedar expressed hope that the bereaved family would be granted patience, strength, and resilience in facing this tragedy. ‘We pray that the deceased attains a good end, is forgiven for his shortcomings, and is received by Allah with His mercy and compassion,’ he said. Ryamizard will be laid to rest with military honours at the Kalibata National Heroes Cemetery in Jakarta on Monday, 1 June 2026.
