Hackers Attack IT Systems of German Undersea Tunnel Contractor
Moscow (ANTARA) – Hackers attacked the information technology (IT) infrastructure of Fermen Link Contractors (FLC), a joint venture responsible for building an undersea tunnel between Germany and Denmark, nearly bringing the project to a standstill this week.
According to German newspaper Bild, which reported the incident on Wednesday, hackers disabled FLC’s IT infrastructure on Monday (12 October).
Danish company Femern A/S, which is working on the project, said it had received information about the incident from FLC.
By the time Bild published its report, no further details had been provided about the extent of the damage or who was responsible for the cyberattack.
Germany and Denmark are building a tunnel about 17 kilometres long to connect Rødbyhavn on the Danish island of Lolland with Puttgarden on the German island of Fehmarn in the north.
The tunnel is expected to become the world’s longest immersed tunnel. It will reduce travel time to just 10 minutes by car and seven minutes by train.
The tunnel is scheduled to open in stages by 2029, with the road link opening first, followed by the railway.
