House of Representatives (DPR) Commission III Chairman Habiburokhman has agreed that vapes or electronic cigarettes should be banned in Indonesia if they are used for consuming narcotics. He stated that his party is currently awaiting a study regarding the prohibition of vape use.

“As Chairman of Commission III of the Indonesian House of Representatives, I strongly agree with President Prabowo Subianto’s discourse on a total ban of vapes in Indonesia if a joint study shows that this commodity poses more risks and continues to be used as a gateway for new types of narcotics,” Habiburokhman said in a statement on Thursday (23/7/2026).

He emphasised that Commission III continues to maintain communication with relevant parties to discuss the dangers of vape use. “We see a tendency for vapes to become the primary tool for using new types of narcotics,” he said.

Previously, Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs Djamari Chaniago delivered President Prabowo Subianto’s mandate during the International Anti-Narcotics Day commemoration in Lido, Bogor. In his mandate, Prabowo conveyed directives regarding regulations on the governance of electronic cigarettes or vapes.

“Today I instruct the Head of the National Narcotics Agency, the Minister of Health, the Minister of Trade, the Minister of Law, the Head of the Food and Drug Supervisory Agency, and the Director General of Customs and Excise to immediately convene, formulate, and strictly re-regulate the trade governance of electronic cigarettes in Indonesia,” Prabowo said in a speech read by Djamari on Thursday (23/7/2026).

Prabowo called for layered supervision of vape distribution channels. He stressed that he would not hesitate to impose a total ban on vapes if they are misused for narcotics. “Implement layered supervision on import and distribution channels. If the joint study shows that this commodity poses more risks and continues to be used as a gateway for new types of narcotics, I order you not to hesitate to implement a total ban on vapes in Indonesia,” he stated.

According to him, public safety is the highest law in Indonesia. He reminded that the fight against narcotics will not succeed without synergy from all parties.
