Habibie, please come to Makassar
Habibie, please come to Makassar
From Rakyat Merdeka
Mr. Habibie demonstrated his statesmanship when he attributed
his withdrawal from the presidential race to maintaining national
unity. I would like now to appeal to Mr. Habibie to also
demonstrate the same statesmanship by visiting the demonstrating
students in Makassar to make them realize that the entire
population sincerely longs for unity and peace.
I also would like to appeal to Mr. Baramuli not to make use of
elements relating to ethnicity, religion, racial origin and
social groups in his campaigns. He should also refrain from
referring to such elements on other public occasions, for example
as he did in the June 7 elections when he called on the people of
Irian Jaya, Maluku, Sulawesi and Kalimantan (IRAMASUKA) to vote
for Habibie in order that they might not always be ordered about
by the Javanese. Mr. Baramuli should also stop his money
politics.
It must be realized that such campaigns as Mr. Baramuli's are
tantamount to sowing the seeds of wind, while the Indonesian
people are now reaping a typhoon as the harvest.
Therefore Mr. Habibie, you must show your statesmanship and
meet the angry students in Makassar.
If you can pacify them, I'm convinced that you will also be
successful with your plan to set up a non-governmental
organization concerned with educational efforts toward national
democracy and human rights.
