Habibie government is stronger

To topple Sukarno and his Old Order regime about ten students'
lives were sacrificed. To make Soeharto abdicate the number of
Trisakti students who died in the struggle was four.

What about the Habibie government? Despite the high number of
fatalities in the Semanggi incident, it still stands. It proves
that the Habibie government is stronger than the two previous
governments.

Or, perhaps, the opposition forces are very weak so they are
not capable of rocking or toppling the Habibie government, which
is said to be illegitimate, transitional, etc.. The weakness of
the opposition forces is mainly caused by the New Order's
repressive policies that made the emergence of an alternative
figure to Soeharto impossible.

After Soeharto's abdication a number of prominent figures
appeared on the political scene but proved to be failures. Among
them were Try Sutrisno, Emil Salim, Edi Sudradjat, Sarwono,
Siswono and so on. The reason is that apart from their great sin
against the people when they were in office they have no real
strong support of the masses.
