GYS Inaugurates Solar Power Facility, Boosting Environmentally Friendly Steel Industry
PT Garuda Yamato Steel (GYS), an integrated steel producer, has announced the successful operation of its first large-scale solar power facility in collaboration with iForte Energi. This marks a transformative milestone in the company’s commitment to sustainable steel production and environmental management.
The 55,000 square metre solar installation, with a total generation capacity of 6.5 megawatt peak (MWp), represents one of the most significant renewable energy investments in Indonesia’s steel manufacturing sector. The facility will supply clean electricity for manufacturing operations, including steel melting plants, rolling mills, warehouses, and administrative facilities, thereby substantially reducing the company’s greenhouse gas emissions and supporting Indonesia’s transition towards an environmentally friendly industry.
PT Garuda Yamato Steel’s solar initiative is part of a comprehensive decarbonisation roadmap designed to position the company as an industry leader in sustainable manufacturing. The company has implemented various technologies and circular economy practices to minimise environmental impact, including:
Electrical arc furnace (EAF) technology: GYS employs more environmentally friendly EAF technology, which significantly reduces carbon emissions compared to traditional blast furnace steel production processes.
Circular economy integration: The company has built a material recovery ecosystem with local communities and industry partners to ensure that steel scrap is recycled into high-quality products and waste is minimised.
Sustainable modernisation: Ongoing investments in revamping and modernising Beam Plant 1 (BP1) demonstrate a commitment to energy-efficient operations and technological advancement.
